Baltimore's Geraci Grows a Hands-On Program
If Tony Geraci were a character on "The Wire," he would be heroic, and he would fail. The HBO drama depicted the Baltimore schools as chronically overwhelmed, with staff members who lacked the authority to effect change. Geraci has the will, plus boundless energy and an unorthodox style. He's not only running Baltimore's school food service, he's campaigning for it. Like a politician on the stump, Geraci tells stories that have a message: It's the kids, stupid. Students deserve to eat delicious, healthful meals. And those meals help students learn.
"You cannot have the expectation that a teacher can teach if the kid is hungry or jacked up on sugar," said Geraci, 52. "My job is to put healthy kids in front of teachers so they can teach."

Two Angry Moms
It all started with my daughters' lunch. My husband and I were packing healthy lunches for our kids, only to find that we were being undermined by the school's offerings of junk food with no nutritional value. It made me angry. So I decided to do something about it. I made a movie.
Along with the movie, we've assembled some tools that will help you create change in your school district. Now our goal is to grow from two to two million angry moms.

A new program being developed by the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Maryland State Board of Education will bring more Maryland-grown products to school lunches and help educate students about where their food comes, how it is produced, and the benefits of a healthy diet.

The Lunch Box
We believe all children must have access to healthy food to grow their bodies, minds and future. We must feed their knowledge while also providing wholesome sustenance to their physical needs. The tools for feeding such change must be equally available to all schools no matter their geography, budget or situation. The relationship children have with food will evolve into a virtuous circle benefiting not just themselves but our society as a whole.
